kpvxl Tomorrow I head to new York for the international contemporary furniture fair (ICFF), an annual exhibition that showcases what’s best and what’s next in design. It’s one of my favourite events of the year, inspiring stories, trends and ideas that land in the magazine in one form or another for months to come.
Here’s a sneak peek of some of the things I’ll be checking out:
1. Manga rugs by Patricia Urquiola
I have a design crush on Spain’s Patricia Urquiola, who supplies ample opportunities for a shout-out to women in design. Seriously, the quality and volume of her output for clients including Moroso and Agape is jaw dropping. Her acclaimed Manga rugs for GAN are debuting in new colours and patterns.
Manga translates to “sleeves.” A single rug uses wool in a variety of textures and colours. The undulating shapes (above and in the first pic of this post) recall their namesake more directly, but the rugs are also available as rectangles (below). So cosy!
2. seating For eating by Studioilse for De La Espada
ICFF marks the official launch of this simple, stunning furniture collection in North America.
Studioilse is a brilliant British firm that does everything from interior and product design to brand identity.
Seating For eating was designed with a charming mandate: to bring people together. It’s made from solid chestnut with copper feet and handcrafted by De La Espada (another fave firm of mine) using sustainable sources.
3. new Marimekko wallpaper
The famous Finnish textile house is launching a number of limited edition wallpaper patterns, including Bottna and Kippis, shown below. They will be available in Canada in July through new Wall, and are perfect for rooms needing a splash of quirky colour.
4. Roll & hill lighting
In February, breakout Brooklyn designer Jason Miller launched Roll & Hill, a lighting company that brings the work of designers such as Lindsey Adelman, Paul Loebach, Sarah Cihat and the rich brilliant willing trio (who were profiled in H&H in September 2009) under one brand.
A fresh crop of lighting designs from Roll & hill is launching at ICFF, including a monogrammed table lamp from Partners & Spade, a new table lamp by Miller, and a chandelier from rich brilliant Willing.
